A Little Older, A Lot More Real

Somewhere between my 30s and now, I stopped trying to be perfect and started trying to be real. I began embracing my gray hair, my wrinkles, and the fact that I’ll never again fit into the jeans I wore in my twenties (and that’s okay). I even cleaned out my closet — not for a “new me,” but for the real me who values comfort over crop tops.

Then one day, I woke up at 40 with a newborn and thought, “Well, this is a plot twist.”

Here’s what I’ve noticed: men get to age like fine wine, while women are told to age like a banana — fast, but invisible. Gray hair? “Distinguished.” Wrinkles? “Character.” Meanwhile, women are over here Googling “best night cream for crow’s feet” at 2 a.m.

I mean, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Chris Pratt, Daniel Craig — the list goes on. These guys are called “silver foxes.” When was the last time anyone called a woman a silver fox? We’re just trying not to be mistaken for someone’s mom at the bar (even though… we probably are).

From plastic surgery to 12-step skincare routines, we women will try just about anything to keep our glow. I was born in ’85, and in high school, “skincare” meant washing your face with whatever was next to the sink. Now it’s serums, toners, acids, and a $90 eye cream that promises miracles but mostly just stings.

I haven’t tried Botox yet — no judgment to those who do — but I do wonder about the long-term effects. I already forget where I put my phone daily; I don’t need my forehead forgetting how to move too.

How you preserve your youth is entirely personal. Whether you’re team Botox, team moisturizer, or team “I woke up like this,” there’s no wrong way to age — as long as you do it on your terms.

According to my research — or should I say, my late-night Google rabbit holes — there are plenty of ways to keep feeling fresh, confident, and a little fabulous, no matter the year on your driver’s license.

1. Stay hydrated.

Yes, I know — every beauty tip ever starts here. But water really is the unsung hero of good skin. Hydrated skin means more elasticity, fewer fine lines, and that healthy glow we’re all chasing. If you’re tired of plain water, add lemon, cucumber, or whatever makes it feel fancy enough to keep sipping.

2. SPF and moisturizer are non-negotiable.

If you do nothing else, do this. Sun damage is basically wrinkles’ best friend. Look for moisturizers with SPF and ingredients like hyaluronic acid or retinol. Vitamin C serums can also help even out skin tone and make you look a little more “just got back from vacation,” even if you didn’t leave your house.

3. Choose your cleanser wisely.

Find a cleanser that does its job without leaving your face feeling like sandpaper. Gentle, hydrating formulas are your best friend. Your skin shouldn’t squeak — it should sigh with relief.

4. Move your body and eat real food.

You don’t need to train for a marathon (unless you want to), but moving your body daily keeps your blood flowing, boosts collagen production, and improves your mood. Pair that with a balanced diet, and you’ve basically found nature’s anti-aging formula.

5. Sleep — the original beauty treatment.

We talk about skincare and serums like they’re miracles, but nothing beats a good night’s sleep. It’s when your body repairs, your skin renews, and your brain hits reset. Beauty sleep isn’t a myth — it’s a lifestyle.

The bottom line is getting older doesn’t mean fading into the background — it means showing your more authentic self. A little older, yes, but a lot more real.
